BOOK REVIEW – BEST IN SHOW by Bo Bengtsons

Bo Bengtson is such a hugely liked and admired man in the world of pedigree show dogs, that I anticipated reviewing this book much as one awaits Christmas morning to see if the hoped for present is there in all it’s glory. I was not disappointed. Here is a book superbly constructed by a master craftsman. A man whose love affair with our world manifests itself on every page of this quite superb book.

It contains thirteen chapters from How Dog Shows Began, through a brilliant overview of breed standards, a look at famous handlers, many famous dogs & judges from around the world, tips on how to succeed in your breed and the icing on the cake is the stunning collection of superb photographs of famous dogs (and people!) from so many countries.

The research required to achieve the standard set by this book is mind boggling , as is the network needed to amass this utterly brilliant collection of photographs which bring to life so many dogs which we have probably heard of but never seen. Apart from many in familiar show poses, there are wonderful pictures of dogs gaiting, some at play and some which will appeal to those of us who appreciate the reminders of some of the great dogs, dog breeders and judges of the past. I especially liked the shot of Mrs. Nagle with two of her last Champion wolfhounds beside a huge Bentley! A real blast from the past.

And this gorgeous tome is packed with other gems, one which particularly appealed to me was a breakdown of the UK BIS winners by Group from 2001/05 and another showing the period from 1947/51. In the latter, Gundogs and Terriers shared 62% of the top awards but the 01/05 shows this had dropped to 25%. The least successful during both periods was the Pastoral Group – one wonders why?

To anyone who has even a passing interest in show dogs this book is an absolute “must have”. It will give endless hours of pleasure as it is such a joy to read, any where, anytime or any place. \Want the feel good factor? – get the book, a comfortable chair, a glass of your favourite tipple and I defy you not to be happy.

Bo, I must congratulate you ……your labour of love will be a welcome addition to my canine library and it is an unqualified triumph. Aptly titled Best In show
