BOOK REVIEW – BEST IN SHOW, THE WORLD OF SHOW DOGS AND DOG SHOWS, Kennel Club Books, A Division of BowTie Inc., 2008, By Bo Bengston

Courtesy of The Ringleader magazine, April 2008

Bo Bengtson is known to many Australians personally and to many others through his high profile in breeding and judging dogs, his long term commitment to Afghan Hound Review, Sighthound Review, and Dogs in Review, his benchmark book on Whippets and now his newly released absolutely stunning BEST IN SHOW: THE WORLD OF SHOW DOGS AND DOG SHOWS.

First learning of its release during Westminster , we received rave reviews from visitors to Crufts about the book and are told it sold out on the first day on the Dog World stand – presumably they had to rush further copies across!  So why is it so special?

From the moment we unpacked the wrapping and saw the Special Limited Edition in its beautiful box, we knew. Even the very special transparent page with Bo's signature on it is different and sets the tone of excitement for “What have we here?”  We started to carefully turn pages and it was like a treasure trove. 600+ pages, almost every one illustrated, with an amazing collection of colour and black and white photos, many of them rare, many of them of familiar faces and dogs. Famous dogs, famous people, famous shows, this book will take WEEKS to view properly and then there will be chapters, anecdotes, previously unknown information and all those special photos to return to again and again. It even addresses the topic so dear to us all right now – where is the show phenomenon heading and can it survive the many threats to its continuance currently in place. It has been accurately described as the be-all and end-all book about dog shows.
